Churches

It's really important that we are all involved in a local church, as the CU itself isn't a church! If you're not yet in a church we'd suggest going to a few that seem like churches you would want to get involved in, but make sure that you settle in a church quickly, and get involved in service and fellowship at your church. Check out the link to the right for a few tips on finding a church. This is also really helpful!

Once you are settled, you may want to find a mentor at your church.  Go to the church mentors page for more information, and a list of contacts.

Southampton  is blessed with many churches, and to present you with a list of 40+ churches would just be a bit mind blowing! To make it a bit easier for you we have set out the list of the churches which currently have the most student involvement*, and the other Southampton churches can be found on the Southampton Christian Network's website.

City Life Church

City Life Church is a lively and multicultural church in Southampton. We meet every Sunday at 10.30am near the University (286 Burgess Road, Southampton, SO16 3BE), partnering with Swaythling Methodist Church and Flower of Justice.

We are part of the Southampton Christian Network and link nationally with other Pioneer churches. As a church, we believe everyone can have a personal relationship with God made possible by the life, death and resurrection of His Son Jesus Christ. We believe in being a Spirit-led and Bible-based people and in expressing Christianity in a non-religious and culturally relevant way to extend the kingdom of God.

City Life serves with the Church in Southampton to make known the love of Jesus Christ for the city, the nation and the world. Our church is based on:

  • Cells: Small groups mutually discipling and aiming to grow through their mission.

  • Celebrations: Larger gatherings for worship with the purpose of making Jesus known.

Student work at City Life
There are a large number of students coming to City Life many of whom are actively involved in the life of the church, from the worship team, to being part of one of the many cells, helping serve tea and coffee, helping lead the children’s work or being part of one of the Missional Communities reaching out around Southampton.

Our desire is to integrate students into the church body, rather than see them as a separate entity within the church, to see students active and growing in their faith and to help see dreams and visions realised (so if you have a heart for something let us know). City Life has a student worker, Dan Pooley who, along with the student team, works with students to help them reach their potential in God.

At the start of the academic year we run 'Welcome Sessions' so that those new to the church (including students) have an opportunity to find out a bit about the church, ask any questions they may have, but more importantly meet some of the existing church members. These sessions run throughout October and the first part of November – if you have missed these but would like to know more about the church and how to get involved just see Dan on Sunday at church.

There are several initiatives that City Life runs which are mainly, although not exclusively, for students – student small groups, belong (the Sunday evening programme), regular Wednesday afternoon events and outreach, Gastronomous (our cookery course) and Towards Maturity (an interactive Bible study and Discipleship course).
